Sabrage or sableado is a technique for opening a bottle of champagne with a saber. It is sometimes used for ceremonial purposes.

This Sabrage technique was popularized in France when Napoleon Bonaparte's army visited many aristocratic estates, shortly after the French Revolution. The saber was the weapon of choice of Napoleon's cavalry. Napoleon's spectacular victories throughout Europe gave them many reasons to celebrate. In those evenings, the cavalry opened the champagne with its swords.
