Description:
Château Latour owes its name to the tower of Saint Maubert, built by the English to protect the estuary during the Hundred Years War. The estate did not turn to winemaking until later when the Ségur family acquired it in 1695. Nicknamed "the Prince of the vines", the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who then owned Mouton and Lafite, had the objective of satisfying the demand of English high society. The marquis improves his wine in such a way that its price will be multiplied by five during the 17th century.
The descendants of the de Ségur keep the majority of the shares of the property and in 1842 create the first agricultural civil society. It was in 1962 that the estate changed hands when an English company, Pearson, bought the majority of the shares. Another British company, Allied Lyons regained control in 1989 until Château Latour finally returned to a French owner in 1993, businessman François Pinault.
The great success of the estate is due to the location of its vines, 47 hectares in one piece called "the enclosure" located between Léoville Las Cases and Pichon Longueville. Resting on a hillside of Garonne gravel very close to the Gironde, this very well drained soil is very deep and warm, the
Les Forts de Latour is the second wine of Château Latour, it takes its name from the historical plot of the enclosure. Les Forts de Latour has existed since 1966, this wine has continued to evolve to offer us today a high-class nectar, now at the level of the Grands Crus Classés of Pauillac.
